Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage uses very gentle light rhythmic techniques that can help reduce water retention (also known as oedema) and it helps to assist in the body’s natural detoxification process and clears away toxins, whether you are pregnant or for postnatal conditions.
Depending on the health condition your are experiencing, treatment can be for a multiple of areas or very localised like the legs and feet. But MLD isn’t used on the full body, due to it’s detoxification effect otherwise you can experience a healing crisis and feel very unwell.
A healing crisis is a temporary worsening of symptoms after beginning a CAM (Complementary and alternative medicine) treatment. You may also see it called a detox reaction, or a cleansing reaction. In a healing crisis, symptoms briefly worsen before beginning to improve. Body aches and pains, headaches, fatigue chills, sweating or flushing, nausea or diarrhea can all be common healing crisis reactions.
If you are suffering from tired feet, heavy legs, bad circulation, fatigue, high blood pressure or water retention. MLD during pregnancy can be extremely helpful. This gentle form of massage encourages the flow and release of fluid held in the body’s tissues. This is why many women find lymphatic massage very beneficial, especially in the later stages of pregnancy usually in third trimester. Fluid retention can be very uncomfortable causing swollen ankles and legs, thus reducing mobility and comfort.
You will lye on the massage couch on your side with the support of pillows. So no pressure is put on major blood vessels as it can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous. If you are required to lay on your back to get to a specific area of the body, you will be inclined with cushions and this will be for a maximum of fifteen minutes.
I only use Cruelty Free, Paraben Free, Vegan Friendly, 100% natural carrier and pure essential aromatherapy oils within my massage treatments.
