I often get inquires whether I use vegan friendly products within my Massage Complementary & Beauty Therapy treatments. The answer is yes, I do as much as possible. Unfortunately I can’t say all my products are, because at present there just aren’t the products available in the Massage, Complementary & Beauty Therapy industry to be all 100% vegan friendly.
To be ‘vegan friendly’ the products need to be made without the use of animal products – such as: diary, beeswax, honey, bugs, insects, chicken feet, chicken bone marrow, parts of cows, pigs and sheep. Many animal ingredients have names that don’t sound like they are animal-derived, so can be difficult to spot.
Products like moisturising creams may use beeswax to make them creamy, increase the thickness and to hydrate your skin more than a moisturising lotion (which is primarily made of water).
Stick-like products such as lipstick and lip salves also have beeswax in them, giving them structure, allowing for a smooth application, and keeping them solid. Vegan friendly versions of these products would need to use a combination of plant waxes instead of beeswax.
I have searched out alternative products to ensure the majority of the products I use are vegan friendly; with only a few exceptions due to the nature of the treatment and the availability of suitable products to get the right results.
I contacted suppliers to check how vegan friendly there brands are. I was pleased to find that they were all very happy to provide me with information on their products. For example, a handful of Eve Taylor skin and body care products contain beeswax or honey, so they advised me which alternatives in their ranges I could use instead to make the treatment 100% vegan friendly for my clients.
For me it’s not just about offering vegan friendly products, I also choose quality products that contain no parabens, formaldehyde, petrochemicals or phthalates; as well as being cruelty-free. To be cruelty-free, there should be no form of animal testing at any point in the creation of the product. However, a product can be cruelty-free and not be vegan.
I feel it is essential to give my clients confidence that I have considered the nature of the ingredients and quality of the products I use, to ensure positive results on their skin, hair and nails when they have treatments with me.
